In September we celebrate Labor Day, kids go back to school, and the wineries work hard through Harvest but we should also take the time to raise our glass to… wine.  September is California Wine Month and we want to make sure everyone is celebrating the elixir that entices tourism and enhances literacy.  Yes, literacy (You thought I was going to say blood-alcohol level). This September, many wineries have pitched in to help improve literacy and your wine country getaway with special discounts or offers.

Did you know that over half of all third grade students read below proficiency?

That’s shocking. Sonoma Wine Country Weekend 2014 happened on Labor Day weekend and the proceeds go to their focused charitable effort “Fund the Future.”

The goal is to increase the third grade literacy rate to 90% by 2018.

TeacherThumbs Up

Children who cannot read by the third grade, studies indicate, are less likely to complete high school, face fewer job prospects, and are more likely to be involved in crime and be arrested.

Studies have shown that by closing the literacy gap economic output would result in nearly an $800 million increase.

This past Labor Day weekend Sonoma County enjoyed winemaker dinner parties, grand reserve wine tastings, and Sommelier-led Seminars to promote children’s literacy.

Wine is making Sonoma County smarter, we all knew that, but now there’s proof!  Single event tickets and packages are available.

In honor of CA Wine Month this September, many wineries and lodgings have participated by offering some kind of discount or tour or prize! Check out the program here.
